#4 – “I’m too busy to learn a language”

Language learning does not have to be scary and can be fit into your busy schedule. I’ve practised my languages throughout university. The key is to make it fun and do a little bit here and there. It all adds up. Here are some convenient ways to incorporate language learning into your daily life.

Duolingo for when you’re on the go.

I use Duolingo everyday for languages that I am still a beginner in. I like the quick lessons that Duolingo has that can be completed in as little as a couple minutes.

Ideas for when to use Duolingo:

  • On the bus or train
  • When waiting in line
  • During lunch breaks
  • When waiting for food to be cooked
  • Replace social media scrolling with Duolingo

Language learning podcast instead of music

Language learning podcasts are useful for when you have things to do but want to listen and learn. This is a convenient way to learn without having to interfere with life’s tasks.

Ideas for when to use Podcasts:

  • While cooking, cleaning
  • When walking to places
  • When exercising

Changing languages on platforms

If you start looking around, you’ll be surprised at how many platforms that we use have options to change languages. For instance, the treadmills at my local gym have the ability to have set the display to 16 different languages. This method may not make a significant difference, but is fun and requires little effort.

Ideas for different platforms:

  • Social media apps
  • Write out your grocery lists in a different language
  • Read the news in a different language

Key Takeaway

Using these methods, it should be doable to incorporate 15 minutes a day to language learning activities. This may not seem like much, but I promise it all adds up!
