#9 – Talking to Yourself

Talking to yourself in a language you are learning can be a new and fun way to practice a language. Here’s how I do it:

Step 1: Imagine a setting

For instance, I can imagine the setting as a restaurant where I am interacting with the waiter

Step 2: Start talking and improvise the dialogue

For instance, start off as the waiter and ask if you can grab any drinks for the table, then switch to being the customer and reply with what drinks you want.

Step 3: Have fun!

Drag the imaginary conversation for as long as you can

Step 4: Revisit gaps in knowledge

As you improvise, you will spot areas where you get stuck and don’t know how to say certain things. Revisit these areas and learn something new! The magic of this method is that you will naturally practice phrases that you will regularly use and be able to spot regularly used phrases that you need help with.

Happy learning.
