Here are 5 reasons why you should consider learning a language!
1. Helps with communication in everyday life.
There have been many instances where I’ve used my second languages to communicate with others. I can recall instances from work, where I was able to effectively help customers who didn’t speak English. Outside of work and business, it is fulfilling to speak to others in their native tongue. Whether that be to help them or just to have a fun conversation with them, many people get really excited and are very appreciative when others are able to speak a language they are familiar with. For instance, I remember one time when a gentleman at a bakery was unable to read the signs because he didn’t know much English, and I was able to help translate for him. This was a very rewarding, and experiences like these make every minute learning languages worth it.
2. Opens up more opportunities for travel
Learning a language can make travelling a much more enriching experience. Being able to have conversations with people when travelling allows for more meaningful connections to be made and for a more fun experience. Plus, it makes it when making purchases e.g. ordering a meal.
3. Allows us to learn more about different cultures
Languages are the backbone of societies and different cultures. Thus, learning a language allows us to better understand different cultures’ values and beliefs. For instance, there are certain words that are not translatable into other languages. The origins of words are also interesting and can teach you a lot about a culture’s history. In Vietnamese, many words are derived from French due to years of French occupation in Vietnam.
4. Opens up opportunities to consume media
Learning an extra language allows us to consume more media in a different language from different parts of the world. Whether it be films, books, a recipe for a delicious dish, or even social media posts and memes, this can be an interesting experience.
5. It’s fun!
Language learning is a hobby that is fun and also productive. With the vast amount of resources available nowadays, it is easy to find a method that works for you. By consistently practising a language, you’ll be amazed at how much progress you will make over time.
